American Cities

A highly developed and powerful nation, the land of opportunity, land of the brave and the free, a multicultural country: this is how many of us see the United States of America. However it is impossible to describe this complex nation in only one paragraph. Its 9,370,000 square kilometres are divided into 50 states, which can be distinguished culturally, politically, geographically and climactically. When we think of American cities, we think of skyscrapers, yellow cabs and Hollywood movie stars. But there are many other sides to this country.

Social structure in the USA

The United States has welcomed more immigrants than any other country. Over time the term ‘melting pot’ has developed to describe the phenomenon of many different cultures fusing together to create something new. After the great immigration waves of the 19th century, the population in the US increased dramatically. Although newcomers were welcomed, some Americans feared for their high standard of living and saw it endangered by the high level of immigration. In 1990 the United States Immigration Law was introduced to restrict immigration.

Because of its comparative willingness to accept foreigners, the USA is a multicultural country, with a rich diversity of language, religion and culture.
