After the great immigration waves of the 19th century, the population in the US increased dramatically. Although newcomers were welcomed, some Americans feared for their high standard of living and saw it endangered by the high level of immigration. In 1990 the United States Immigration Law was introduced to restrict immigration.

Because of its comparative willingness to accept foreigners, the USA is a multicultural country, with a rich diversity of language, religion and culture.
