Past progressive
Das past progressive wird gebildet mit den Formen was, were und der ing-Form des Vollverbs.
was/were | ing-Form | |
I was | walking | down the street. |
We were | laughing | really loud. |
Das past progressive bezieht sich wie das simple past auch auf die Vergangenheit, jedoch liegt die Betonung auf dem Verlauf einer Handlung oder eines Vorgangs. Diese Zeitform kommt im Englischen immer dann vor, wenn eine ablaufende Handlung abrupt unterbrochen wird:
Bill was listening to music when the phone rang.
They were watching TV when there was a loud knock at the door.
Auch wenn zwei Handlungen zu gleicher Zeit verlaufen, wird das past progressive eingesetzt:
While Bill was writing an essay, his brother was playing soccer.
While half of our class was reading our play, the other half was rehearsing the play on stage.
